Eve Whitaker | Figurative Artist | Painting & Sculpture

Biography:

Eve Whitaker is a Lansing, Michigan–born artist who studied printmaking at Indiana University and earned her BFA from Michigan State University. She spent much of her adult life in Texas and now resides in Florida. Whitaker is among the original artists represented by the Joyce Petter Gallery in Saugatuk MI.

Working across painting and sculptural doll-making, Whitaker’s practice is grounded in an unflinching commitment to emotional clarity. In alignment with Emmet Gowin’s belief that an artist must remain open, vulnerable, and revealing, her work resists sentimentality—“I don’t do cute,” she has said—in favor of psychologically charged studies of human interaction.

Her dolls, often constructed from wood, textiles, and found materials, extend this inquiry into three dimensions. The physicality of the process—sawing, pounding, chiseling—becomes integral to the work, offering a parallel creative channel when painting recedes. Across media, Whitaker’s work confronts intimacy, tension, and the complexity of lived relationships with directness and force.

Artist's Statement:

“Although visually theoretical work has given us new ways to look at the world, my own work can never linger in abstractions and always arrives back around to the human figure and it’s complicated relationships”
